December 11 was established in 2003 by the United Nations as International Mountain Day to highlight the vital role that the mountain plays in people’s lives and to remind the international community of its responsibility to preserve it. Mountains cover 1\/5 of the land and provide life to 1\/10 of the world’s population. Forest deforestation contributes to ecological degradation and biodiversity loss.<\/p>\n
Parnitha (1.413m.), Hymettus (1.026m.) and Penteli (1.109m.) are the mountains that surround Athens and are both easily accessible with some beautiful trails, even for beginners hikers.<\/p>\n
To reach Hymettus, take the bus 224 from Evangelismos Hospital (blue line of metro) and get off at the last station (\u201cKesariani\u201d) and then start hiking. You can also have a break in Kalopoula kiosk to have your lunch or a drink, or just have a picnic in the place you like more. But, please, take the garbage with you!<\/p>\n
For Parnitha, if you don\u2019t have your own car, you can take the bus 504 from Kifissia Station on the green line metro and get off at the last station Agia Triada. Then, if you don\u2019t want to hike on the path, there is an option to take the cable. When you reach the top, there are two refuges (Flabouri and Mpafi) to have a break, eat, drink or even sleep there. We highly recommend to rent a car or book a taxi to be more comfortable and focus on a hike day.<\/p>\n
If you want something even closer in the centre of Athens, just go to Lycabettus Hill, preferably in the sunset hours. An experience in Athens you should live. But please dress warm for all these activities.<\/p>\n
