Exhibition The Parthenon and Byron<\/a> <\/strong>on the occasion of 200 years anniversary since Byron\u2019s death. Until\u00a0 31 August 2025.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On the occasion of 200 years since Lord Byron\u2019s death, the Acropolis Museum honours his memory with a small, symbolic exhibition related to Lord Elgin\u2019s seizure of the architectural sculptures of the Parthenon.<\/p>\n

It is said that Byron\u2019s last words before his death were about Greece:<\/p>\n

“I gave her my time, my health, my presence, and now I am giving her my life. What more could I have done?”<\/p>\n

And yet, as one will notice in the small presentation at the Acropolis Museum ground floor, Byron left us one more, unexpected gift, that contributes eloquently and powerfully to the arguments for returning and reuniting the architectural sculptures of the Parthenon. It is Byron\u2019s passport, an authentic Sultanic firman, which allowed him to travel across the territory of the Ottoman Empire. The firman-Byron\u2019s passport provides yet another opportunity to challenge the argument of the alleged existence of Elgin\u2019s \u201cfirman\u201d which ostensibly sanctioned the removal of the Parthenon sculptures. Other than the firman, Museum visitors will have the opportunity to see the \u201cExodus from Messolonghi\u201d (1827) by Louis Joseph Toussaint Rossignon, one of many painters inspired by this subject.<\/p>\n

The small exhibition and the publication accompanying it include three sections:<\/p>\n

a) a selection of annotated traveler images from the Acropolis and the Parthenon (by Carrey, Dodwell, Fauvel, Pars, among others),<\/p>\n

b) a short biography and excerpts from Byron\u2019s poems \u201cThe Curse of Minerva\u201d and \u201cChilde Harold\u2019s Pilgrimage\u201d, which refer to the brutal detachment and destruction of the Parthenon\u2019s architectural sculptures by Elgin and their subsequent underhanded seizure and removal, and<\/p>\n

c) Byron\u2019s original passport, a genuine, unexpected Sultanic firman [Islamic royal mandate or decree], exhibited for the first time in the Museum, and serving as an opportunity to reopen the discussion on the return and reunification of the Parthenon sculptures.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is open to the public at the Museum\u2019s ground floor. No ticket is required.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual publication (Greek-English) which is available in the Museum Shops.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Starting April 4, we welcome the summer season with a new themed gallery talk!<\/b><\/p>\n

The dearness of water on every realm of life, from plain survival to the wider prosperity and growth, is unfathomable throughout the ages. Water constitutes a social commodity with cultural, political, religious and financial impacts, utterly intertwined with the history of mankind. Through the presentation of certain exhibits of the Acropolis Museum, which are parts of the permanent collections of the building and the archaeological excavation on its base, visitors can follow and grasp the display of the perception of water in antiquity, while all different aspects of water, and in particular the strong interconnection with the other precious commodity of wellness, are unravelled before them. The museum\u2019s archaeologists will present to its visitors, through its artwork and the architectural remains of the excavation, the human agonies, beliefs, preconceptions but also answers and practical solutions for the attainment of welfare, through the prism of divine, human, personal and collective sectors within the context of the polis.<\/p>\n
