Recognising the long history and the profound cultural and economic importance of tea around the world, the UN General Assembly declared 21 May as International Tea Day<\/strong>
\nTea tree cultivation and tea production are a major source of livelihood for millions of families, especially in developing countries.<\/p>\n

The celebration promotes sustainable tea production, consumption and trade<\/strong>. It also provides an opportunity to ensure that the tea sector continues to play a role in reducing extreme poverty, fighting hunger and conserving natural resources.<\/p>\n

Tea is a decoction made by steeping young leaves and leaf buds of the tea tree (camellia sinensis) in freshly boiled water.<\/p>\n

Tea is consumed as a hot or cold beverage by half the world’s population and is the most important of all drinks made from plant leaves. It is, however, second only to coffee in terms of economic importance, mainly due to the fact that a large proportion of the world’s tea production is consumed in the producing countries.<\/p>\n

The largest producer of tea in the world is China with 2.5 million tonnes per year, followed by India with 1.3 million tonnes and Kenya with 440,000 tonnes (FAO data, 2017).<\/p>\n
