Tip of the day – Stand-up comedy shows in English in Athens

Stand-up comedy has grown in popularity in Greece in recent years. While it wasn’t a traditional form of entertainment in the country—comedy in Greece historically leaned more toward theater, sketch shows, and satirical revues—stand-up has carved out a niche, particularly among younger audiences. The stand-up comedy scene in Greece began developing in the early 2000s and has since grown steadily. Comedians usually perform in both Greek and English, appealing to local and international audiences.  Stand-up comedy festivals and events, such as the Athens Comedy Festival, have contributed to the growth of the art form, attracting both local and international performers.

If you never haven’t attended a stand-up comedy show, you can follow the facebook  page Athens English Comedy Club to discover all the weekly shows and  open mic that take  place  in Athens for shows in English language. Of course, as it became a really popular show the last years, many famous comedians present their show in Greece too during their European/international tour, so maybe you will be lucky enough to attend one too.

If you speak some Greek, or you want to practice them by attending a stand up comedy show in Greek, there are many venues that every week host various comedians. Some examples of those venues  are Losantzele at Neos Kosmos area, Orfeas in Kypseli, Artzentina in Exarchia, Avaton Theater in Kerameikos etc

Athens English Comedy Club

Founded in 2019, the Athens English Comedy Club is the first, and only, purely English comedy club in Greece – bringing you local and international comedians, right in the heart of Athens. In the last 6 years, the AECC has hosted lineup shows, open mics, solo shows, online competitions, and comedy workshops, with more than 130 comedians from *29 countries*. It’ll be a mix of everything! A potluck of comedy! Colourful, comedic chaos, all in English!

Emmy-winning comedy writer Louis C.K. is coming to Athens on February 25th & 26th 2026, at CT Theater.

Louis C.K. is a six-time Emmy Award and three-time Grammy Award winner. He has released over ten stand up specials including his most recent “Louis C.K. at the Dolby,”  “Sorry,” and “Sincerely, Louis C.K.,” all released direct to fans on his website. In 2023, C.K. live-streamed his sold out in the round performance from Madison Square Garden, aptly named “Back To The Garden,” through his website.  Previous specials include “Shameless,” “Chewed Up,” “Hilarious,” “Word – Live at Carnegie Hall” (audio), “Live at the Beacon Theater,” “Oh My God,” “Live at the Comedy Store,” and “Louis C.K. 2017.” C.K. is the creator, writer, director, and star of the Peabody Award winning shows “Louie” and “Horace and Pete.” C.K. also co-wrote, directed, and appeared in the feature film “Fourth of July,” released in theaters nationwide in July 2022. In January 2015, he became the first comedian to sell out Madison Square Garden three times for the same tour.

ABOUT ŽANA (BIH/USA):
Born in Bosnia, raised in Florida, and living in Berlin, Žana’s comedy mirrors her eclectic cultural background and is best described as Balkan pessimism battling delusional American positivity sprinkled in with reggaeton flair.
Within 5 months of starting comedy she became a finalist in the 2022 Berlin New Stand Up Awards and is now hosting & producing shows in Berlin & across Europe. She was nominated for Manchester’s Women in Comedy Festival Awards as Best Newcomer in 2024 and has opened in English & Spanish for a variety of comedians across Europe in such as Dragos Christian, Dwayne Perkins, Rob Anderson, Elena Gabrielle & Silvia de Frente.
