UNESCO proclaimed April 30th as World Jazz Music Day during its general assembly in November 2011 in Paris. The purpose of the celebration is “to shed light on the important role of jazz as an art form and a means of communication that transcends differences”. The initiative was taken by the famous American jazz musician Herbie Hancock, who described jazz as a “voice of freedom”. 30 April was chosen as World Jazz Day because it coincides with the last day of Jazz Month, which is celebrated every April in the United States, the birthplace of jazz music.
