Originating in Australia, National Mushroom Day is particularly meant for mushroom farmers, restaurants, cafes and health professionals to enjoy and celebrate everything related to growing and eating mushrooms. With more than 14,000 different species of mushrooms that grow around the world, the mushroom is an unassuming food that should be more carefully considered on this day! They are also one of the most sustainably produced foods on the planet. So no one needs to feel guilty about filling up on them! Plus, mushrooms are low in calories and contain a wide variety of nutritious substances that are part of a healthy and balanced diet for humans. So eat a lot of mushrooms and eat them often! And last but not least, mushroom picking becomes something like a hobby for many people and you will find many activities around to collect mushrooms on forests and mountains  organized by experts.

If you are  travelling north Greece, we highly recommend to visit the Meteora Natural History Museum & Mushroom Museum, a spectacular museum that usually organizes special events on this day. The museum is located in the town of Kalambaka, so you can combine it after your visit to the famous rocks in the monasteries of Meteora. And if you continue your journey north, only 2 hours from Meteora you will find the village of Vitsas in Zagorochoria and the restaurant Kanela & Garyfallo, the only restaurant in Greece specializing in mushroom recipes. And of course you can get a lot of information and talk about them with the owner.
