Paper  Couds @ Triton & Shell – Paper Art Hub

The exhibition
The exhibition features handmade kites full of color and power. Floating in space, they highlight their balance and invite us to imagine them in flight, understanding the relationship between shape and color, weight and air. Although they appear simple in construction, kites require precision, detail, and a deep knowledge of materials in order to fly. Their functionality is not just a feature, but an organic part of the artistic process.

Tradition & contemporary perspective
Anna Onesti draws inspiration from historical types of kites from Japan and Korea, creating her own contemporary approach through this traditional art.

In dialogue with paper
The temporary exhibition Paper Clouds converses with the exhibition “Handmade Paper from Asia to Europe,” shifting the focus from the history of the material to its contemporary artistic use. It is the first solo exhibition by an artist presented at Triton & Shell, as part of its activities to promote paper as an artistic and cultural medium.

A special moment in time
The opening of the exhibition, a few weeks before Clean Monday, creates a subtle but meaningful link between a distant Asian tradition and a custom deeply rooted in Greek culture.

Handmade paper made from mulberry fibers (kozo), known as washi in Japan and hanji in Korea, plays a central role in her work — a highly durable and versatile paper traditionally used in calligraphy and printing as well as in everyday objects

From space to the sky
The exhibition is complemented by photographs of kites in flight, which transport the viewer from the exhibition space to the open horizon, connecting the work with the sky, the wind, and movement. The narrative moves between the static and the dynamic, the object and the action. Selected publications and documents from previous exhibitions further illuminate the artist’s journey.

Short bio of Anna Oresti: 

Anna Onesti is an Italian artist with a long-standing interest in handmade paper, natural dyes, and traditional East Asian techniques.
She studied at the Academies of Fine Arts in Rome, Urbino, and Turin and worked for many years as a conservator of drawings and engravings at important Italian institutions.

Since 1994, when she made her first trip to Japan on a Japan Foundation scholarship, she has been studying in depth the techniques of making, dyeing, and decorating handmade paper in Japan, Korea, India, and Indonesia.
Since 2005, she has been creating kites based on traditional Eastern typologies, exploring the relationship between paper, color, structure, lightness, and movement.

Her works have been presented internationally in museums and institutions and are included in public and private collections. Her work moves in the field where know-how, materiality, and visual arts meet cultural memory and contemporary artistic research.

A CENTURY OF KARAGIOZIS: FROM STREETS AND SQUARES  TO MUSEUM

The Museum of Modern Greek Culture and the Panhellenic Shadow Theatre Association present the exhibition “100 YEARS OF KARAGIOZIS. FROM THE SHEEPFOLDS TO THE MUSEUM,” which opens on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the Museum’s Temporary Exhibition Building (9 Klados Street, Athens).

The exhibition deals with Greek shadow theater, its historical journey and presence in Greece from its beginnings in the 19th century to the 21st century, in a dialectic with the course and work of the Association, which is celebrating a century of life.

Selected items from the collection of the Museum of Modern Greek Culture interact with items from the collection of the Panhellenic Shadow Theatre Association, as well as from private collections, and, in combination with visual and digital material, demonstrate the richness and evolution of the performing art of Karagiozis, the breadth of the artistic creation of Karagiozis players, the visual value of the tools used in the performance, and its socio-cultural impact in general.
