Tip of the day – Discover Athens Underground! 1024 535 Cloudkeys

Do you know that even the underground  Athens has a lot of stories  to discover as you  are walking there?  Remnants of the traces left by the Second World War, in underground bunkers next to busy streets, catacombs with tunnels from ancient aqueducts, ruins of Roman baths and Byzantine ossuaries, as well as precious objects or relics in crypts, springs and streams that survive by rolling in old galleries under the most central streets. The stairs that start under an antique lid on the side of the street or in the flowerbeds of a sidewalk can lead us to a forgotten underground corner of the city, but never attempt this alone! The centuries-old presence of underground passages of various uses beneath the city does not prove that everything is connected, yet the charm of an unknown world continues to hover beneath our feet.

How many surprises does an underground walk under the city hold?

  • Under which central square does the lost Herodian of the Roman era continue to flow?
  • Were you aware of the secret shelter beneath the shops on the pedestrian street of Ermou?
  • What sacred vessels, relics and precious manuscripts are kept under the Metropolis?
  • What lies beneath the famous Russian Church on Philellinon Street?
  • We open the trapdoor with awe and descend the stone steps. Inside the catacomb we find tunnels of ancient aqueducts, Roman baths and Byzantine crypts.
  • Does the bed of the Ilisos and other lost streams of old Athens still exist?
