St Paul’s Sessions 7 (2024-2025) recreates a fresh wave of radical artists, exploring the connection between contemporary music, generative art and digital performance.

All the concerts in St Paul’s Sessions 7 will take place in the famous and still unfinished ‘Ioannis Despotopoulos’ Amphitheatre in the emblematic building of the Athens Conservatoire in the centre of Athens, which opened its doors to the public for the first time last year after many years of waiting. The Athens Conservatoire is housed in the iconic building designed by the famous architect Ioannis Despotopoulos. It is located in the heart of downtown Athens, close to the Presidential Palace, Aristotle’s Lyceum, the Byzantine Museum and the Greek Parliament.
Saturday 15 March 2025: Bill Frisell Trio at St Paul’s Sessions 7 @ Athens Conservatory
The famous Bill Frisell Trio, one of the most recognizable and influential groups of contemporary jazz, led by the legendary American Bill Frisell on electric guitar, Thomas Morgan on double bass and Rudy Royston on drums, live at St Paul’s Sessions 7 and the “Ioannis Despotopoulos” Amphitheatre of the Athens Conservatory.
Born in 1951 in Baltimore, USA, Bill Frisell has established himself over the decades as one of the most innovative and versatile musicians, masterfully bridging a variety of musical genres, from jazz and Americana to ambient and experimental music.
Known for his unique guitar sound, often accompanied by effects and loops, he creates an atmosphere full of emotion and depth, with his compositions combining elaborate melodies, improvisational passages and cinematic harmonies.
Bill Frisell has released a number of major albums, with many of them featuring his famous trio, being the ideal vehicle to explore his unique sound, combining melodic sensitivity with improvisation and harmonic collaboration between the members.
The Bill Frisell Trio consists of the American Thomas Morgan, a double bassist with a unique sensitivity and deep harmonic understanding, who highlights his extraordinary musical connection with Frisell. The band is completed by Rudy Royston, also an American, a drummer known for his expressiveness and versatility, who adds an explosive yet detailed approach to the drums, enhancing the dynamics of the group.
One of the most important releases, highlighting the dynamics of this trio, is the album “Small Town” (2017), recorded at New York’s Village Vanguard and released by ECM, showcasing the trio’s ability to redefine classic themes such as “Wildwood Flower” and “Goldfinger”. The next album, “Epistrophy” (2019), always on ECM, continues on the same path, with jazz standards and covers such as Thelonious Monk’s title track and the traditional “Red River Valley.”
The Bill Frisell Trio is a benchmark for contemporary jazz and music in general, with the unique technical excellence and innovative approach of its constituent musicians establishing it as one of the most influential groups of our time, influencing listeners and musicians alike.
