The Museum of Zoology of the University of Athens belongs to the Department of Biology. It is housed in the University Campus, and has an area of approximately 2,200 square meters. Its history began 150 years ago, as part of the Physiographic Museum of the University of Athens, in the form of a small collection of stuffed animals. Today it is the oldest and richest zoological museum in Greece. The museum’s collections include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, marine invertebrates, snails, insects and other invertebrates from Greece and other countries, as well as anthropological finds. The Museum’s activities include the conservation of natural heritage in Greece, through the preservation of collections and through the creation of databases and archives, research on the fauna of Greece, education of students, raising public awareness, especially among young people, and providing advice to individuals, organisations, public services, etc. Today, the Museum of Zoology receives about 10,000 visitors per year, mainly primary and secondary school students.
